Fred was an extremely progressive and successful farm owner/operator, with corn acreage output in the 1970ís reaching 200 bushels per acre, and increased the size of the farming operation through the purchase of additional farmland. During this period Leona worked part time as an aide at the Lutz Wing of the Fairmont Community Hospital. She was actively involved in gardening, and entered many events with her produce and baked items at the Martin County Fair, receiving numerous awards. Leona was an avid quilter and made quilts for many of her family members over the years. Leona and Fred took many foreign trips, a number of them being through the University of Minnesotaís People-to-People Goodwill Tours program. They hosted a delegation from Hungary in the 1970ís. Leona and Fred spent many winters at Mesa, AZ enjoying the sunny climate there during the winter season, and traveled to Hawaii several times. Leona was a member of the Fairmont Methodist Church.
